A global fashion business sold to thirty-five different countries, with shops in London, Paris, Milan, New York and Hong Kong, to name but a few. Not bad for a Nottinghamshire lad with no qualifications!

Starting out at 16, in a local clothing warehouse, Paul Smith had no particular dreams of becoming a designer, in fact his real passion lay in being a professional cyclist. But it wasn’t until a couple of years later, when he found himself hanging out with students from the local art college, that Smith became excited by the colourful world of art, design and ideas. Just two years on and Smith was managing his first boutique in Nottingham and with the encouragement of his girlfriend (now wife) and a modest amount of savings, in 1970 he opened his first small shop. It was from there that Smith started taking evening classes to learn the art of tailoring and together with his wife, Pauline (an RCA fashion graduate) Paul was able to create exactly what he wanted. Six years later, Paul showed his first menswear collection in Paris under the ubiquitous Paul Smith label.
