About Donna Karan and DKNY

Born to a fashion model and a haberdasher, Donna Karan's life was steeped in fashion from childhood. In the early days, Karan attended the prestigious Parson's School in New York. The Parson's School has a pretty impressive alumni. Tom Ford and Marc Jacobs both began their careers here. After two years studying, Karan went to work for sportswear supremo, Anne Klein, there, Karan swiftly worked her way through the ranks until, in 1971, she became associate designer. Karan remained at the company until 1985 when, together with her husband, Stephen Weiss, she launched her eponymous Donna Karan label. It was just three years later that Karan extended her "Donna Karan New York" line with a less expensive one, aimed at younger women called simply, DKNY. The DKNY line became so popular and lucrative that Karan is regarded as being the first designer to successfully establish a diffusion line.
